You're at work, sitting at your desk absorbed in some vital issue. The door opens, and one of your employees walks in and closes the door behind them, single sheet of paper in hand.
They have an anxious but liberated look on their face, and your heart starts pumping faster, your vital issue forgotten.
They don’t even have to say it – the look says it loud and clear: "I’m resigning.”
Sighhhhh.......
Immediately you start to think about the stack of resumes left over from your last ad, whether the one person you liked but didn't hire is still interested, and whether you can still make the job ad deadline at the newspaper.
Stop and ask yourself: do I really need to hire someone to fill this seat?
If that seems like a stupid question to ask, you need to read this series BEFORE you start spending money and time on interviews.
I’ve worked with company after company that just keeps filling the same seat without ever thinking through the issues. Thousands and thousands of bottom line dollars LOST because they didn’t answer a few basic questions to make sure they were aimed the right way before they pulled the trigger.
