The Inevitable Results of Hiring a Lazy Nose-Picker

I went to a local fast-food franchise with my 8-year old son the other day. According to him they have the coolest toys in their kids' meals, so as a treat I occasionally take him even though the food makes my stomach rumble like Mount Saint Helens.

Here's what I saw as I went in: practically taking a nap on the counter was a young man in what may once have been a white shirt (now splotched, discolored and un-tucked) and a crumpled tie. He had a cheesy moustache and a "soul patch."

He could barely rouse himself to look at me. When he did, he glared at me with very bloodshot eyes, gave me a quick upward jerk of his chin as a greeting, and said "Wha's happ'nin."

And then, while waiting for me to order, HE STUCK HIS FINGER UP HIS NOSE. His manager stood leaning up against the French-fry warmer, arms folded, without a care in the world. I was so shocked my mouth fell open.

Needless to say, my son got his toy from some other fast food place that day.

I could tell you 3 more stories from this last weekend alone -

* The salesperson in a clothing store that ignored me for 10 minutes - I bought shoes at the store a few spots down at the mall instead.

* The surly counterman at an auto parts who treated me like a sissy because I didn't know how to change out the headlamp bulb on my Camry...wouldn't go back there again if they were giving stuff away.

* The customer service rep at my (former) web hosting company who couldn't speak plain English - while I was wrestling with an email problem that was costing me sales!

I'll bet you don't need me to tell you the stories - you probably experience a lazy nose-picker almost every day of the week.

They can be the kiss of death for the small business struggling mightily to keep the bottom line in the black.

Some of them are obvious (like the burger boy) but others aren't - they dress nicer, show up pretty much on time, and don't make gross mistakes. But they're producing much the same result as the obvious nose-picker through indifference or repeated ineptness.

DON'T hire them! You can build a system that will screen them out.
